Thanks for LinkedIn Endorsing Me as a Lingerie Model

by

Okay, admittedly, no one has ever LinkedIn endorsed me as a lingerie model. However, I do wonder about some of the LinkedIn endorsements I have recently received (and thank you if you have endorsed me), based on the talent that was being endorsed by the person endorsing it. So that got me to wondering…

Are people confused with how LinkedIn Endorsements work?

liblog1

There are two parts to LinkedIn Endorsements. The first being how to endorse another person’s skills, and the second being making it easy for someone to endorse your skills. Let’s tackle endorsing others first.

A LinkedIn Endorsement is a service that LinkedIn offers that seems to be a reaction to Facebook “Likes.” When you view the profile of one of your first level LinkedIn connections, a number of words appear that are supposed to be skills that your connection possesses. (Note that this doesn’t always happen and I unfortunately cannot tell you why on some profiles this feature appears and on others it does not). You can endorse the skills associated with the person by clicking the “Endorse” button. You can even enter words and LinkedIn will suggest additional skills. However, whereby Facebook “likes” are rather intuitive and easy to use, I think a majority of LinkedIn users are confused by the endorsement feature.

For example, people who have heard me speak and who have even written a testimonial for my speaking programs, on LinkedIn, endorse me for “advertising” even though I’ve never done any advertising for that person. Yet they don’t endorse me for my speaking. I just doesn’t make logical sense.

The answer can most likely be found in how LinkedIn presents Endorsements. Again, if you view a first-level connection, at the top of your connection’s profile, a big and bold box appears with a large headline that states “Does XXXXXX have these skills or expertise?” In the box are the skill words.

LinkedIn Endorsement 2

The logical next step based on the headline question would be to click on the words corresponding with the skill you want to endorse. However, THE EXACT OPPOSITE HAPPENS. When you click on a skill word you are NOT endorsing that particular skill. Rather, you are removing that skill from the Endorsement list. Then when you click the “Endorse” button, the only skills you are endorsing are the ones that remain. This is completely non-intuitive.

So in my situation, I’m wondering if people are clicking the “Public Speaking” button thus removing it from the list, and when they click the “endorse” button, what I’m being endorsed for is the word(s) that remain, e.g., “advertising.”

Also note that when reviewing another person’s profile, you can scroll down and review all of the skill words that are associated with the profile. At this point, if you do click on a word, it does actually provide your endorsement for that skill. However, since most people come across endorsements when first viewing someone’s profile, this more intuitive way to provide a skill endorsement is largely missed.

Linkedin Profile Menu

So how can you control the skills that people endorse about you?

The good news is, it’s easy.

Once logged into your LinkedIn account, click the “Profile” tab on the upper navigation, and from the pull-down menu, choose “Edit Profile.” On your profile page, scroll down until you see the “Skills and Expertise” section. Click the small “Edit” link.

Once in the “Edit Skills & Expertise” section, you can delete skills that are not important to you to have endorsed, or add new skills. You can have a total of 50 skills. Unfortunately, there is no way to rank or prioritize your skills. Meaning, what shows up when someone looks at your profile is completely random, because only about a dozen of your chosen skills appear. So it may actually serve you better to limit the number of skills in your profile, so irrelevant ones don’t randomly appear.

LinkedIn Managing Endorsements

For those who have read my book and/or attended my Know More! programs, you know I am a HUGE fan of LinkedIn. The Endorsement feature can be very powerful one, once you know how to effectively use it.

Now that you know how to correctly endorse someone on LinkedIn (and no, picture aside,…I will not be adding “lingerie model” to my LinkedIn profile anytime soon), I hope you take advantage of this cool service and promote those with whom you’ve had a positive business experience. And now that you know how to have some control on what others endorse about you, I hope your business contacts share their positive experiences. You can become a power endorser user…now that you Know More!

Why I’ll never feed the homeless again…

Marilyn Sherman
This blog post was written by motivational speaker, Marilyn Sherman. The first time I read it - I was truly inspired! I re-read it again today, and thought it was worth sharing to our readers, too. If you haven't read this - take 2 minutes... You'll be glad you did!

Why I’ll never feed the homeless again…
Written by: Marilyn Sherman | Posted: December 4, 2012

Friends in Las Vegas invited my husband Yves and I to gather at their church and go offer Thanksgiving food, fixings, and love to the homeless community. We jumped at the chance to be a part of such a loving, caring, self-less group.

The day was amazing – my job was to be a 'Greeter' welcoming the homeless at the entrance of a park where we had set up a long table of everything you can imagine to eat for Thanksgiving. As the homeless started to gather and line up, I was there to shake their hands, offer a smile, and welcome each one.  Some were very friendly and open about their gratitude that we were there. Some were a little more reserved, offering a simple thanks. One man touched me specifically because he said "I often ask Why, why why doesn't anyone care that we are out here? But today, I see that you do."
The day went quickly, with roughly 300 meals given with love to people who were simply hungry. I was very moved and so glad for the opportunity to be of service. My sister called me to wish me a happy Thanksgiving and asked me what I was up to. I told her that Yves and I were going to feed the homeless. Yves quickly interrupted me and said, "You feed the dogs. You serve the homeless".  Wow. What a distinction. One small change showed me how I never want to feed the homeless again, but when I can, I would like to serve them instead. Serve with love, gratitude, and hope and with the intention of showing them that someone cares.
Yves and I were so moved by this experience that we signed up for serving at Catholic Charities soup line for the homeless when our schedule permits. Our first day was Friday and all the feelings from Thanksgiving came flooding back – gratitude, hope and joy of being able to serve (and not feed) the homeless.

Motivational Icon Zig Ziglar Dies at 86

Renowned motivational speaker Zig Ziglar died today at age 86. Zig was revered by many as the "father of motivational speaking," and helped millions of people succeed in their personal lives and careers with his humor and lessons grounded in Christianity. Zig wrote over two dozen books, including his famous "See You at the Top."

While so many of our speaker friends did, I never had the privilege of getting to hear Zig speak in person. I wanted to share the following video clip, as it features one of Zig's famous "attitude" stories. I watched this today, imagining being in that very audience. Soaking up his every word and meaningful nugget. With his Southern charm, he was talking directly to me as I sit in the front row (hopefully next to the guy with the thick, seventies mustache, that would have been groovy)...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRMogDrHnMQ

And you'll probably recognize some or all of the quotes below. They are Zig's Top 10 quotes, and he said they have the power to completely change the direction of one’s life. Given the example he set for a life well-lived, I'm inclined to believe him. RIP Zig.

10. “Remember that failure is an event, not a person.”
 9.  “You will get all you want in life, if you help enough other people get what they want.”
 8.  “People often say motivation doesn’t last. Neither does bathing—that’s why we recommend it daily.”
 7.  “There has never been a statue erected to honor a critic.”
 6.  “People don’t buy for logical reasons. They buy for emotional reasons.”
 5.  “Expect the best. Prepare for the worst. Capitalize on what comes.”
 4.  “If you go looking for a friend, you’re going to find they’re scarce. If you go out to be a friend, you’ll find
       them everywhere.”
 3.  “A goal properly set is halfway reached.”
 2.  “Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.”
 1.  “If you can dream it, you can achieve it.”

Dr. Gary Bradt Nominated for "Top5 Speaker" Award

We couldn't be happier that Speakers Platform just nominated our very own Gary Bradt for their 2013 "Top5 Speaker" Award in the Management/Business category! Congratulations, Gary!!!
CAST YOUR VOTE FOR GARY NOW!  http://www.speaking.com/top5

This is a HUGE testament to Gary's work as a professional speaker, since Speakers Platform is one of the leading full-service speakers bureaus and books some of the best speakers across the U.S. and Canada. Every year they recognize just FIVE speakers within the ten most popular topic areas, with recognition of excellence in speaking being based on: expertise, professionalism, innovation within the topic area, client testimonials and references, presentation skills and online votes.

We might be biased, but we think Gary is once again a shoe-in to win this award. Yep, that's right. Gary has won this award TWICE over the years! And not because of the online votes, because if you know Gary at all, you know he's incredibly humble and self-promotion isn't his thing. But I guess that's the great thing about being Gary's manager...we can promote him shamelessly!!! OK, so it's the second greatest thing about being his manager.

MAKE YOUR OWN CIRCUMSTANCES

November newsletter
by speaker Kit Grant

“People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don’t believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want and if they can’t find them, make them.” … George Bernard Shaw,

Not everyone gets dealt the same hand (thankfully). There will be some good things happen to you and some bad things. How you respond to each will largely determine your level of success, however you define that. Accepting personal responsibility for your outcomes is the first step in changing them. Always reacting to what others have created for you prevents your inner creativity from bringing about even better results. Stop blaming and move on — it frees you up for better circumstances.

HOORAY!
I am writing this on the day of the US elections and I say “hooray” just because it is finally over. There has to be a better system tan dragging this thing on for two or more years. The longer it goes, the nastier it seems to become with a few people even abandoning long-term friendships over their differing views. Social media has allowed people to say things they would never say face-to-face and makes an exchange of ideas harder. So, regardless of who wins today, I’m just glad it’s over.

WHAT’S THE RUSH?
Recently a large drugstore chain in Canada received criticism for playing Christmas music in their stores staring November 1st. This is just too early! — why are we wishing our life away? I understand their need to sell product but the day after Halloween is a bit quick to get the Christmas push underway and it has backfired on them. Are we in a race to see who can finish the year most quickly? Shoppers Drug Mart — I’m thinking you jumped a bit too soon this year!

The reason I do what I do - by Sarah Whitten

After starting Standard Ovation over 8 months ago with my two business partners Amy Crocker & Charlotte Raybourn, I had a moment of realization last night that made me stop for a minute. I never realized it until then, but the goals I have in my personal life - happen to be the identical goals of our company. It was such a revelation to absorb that our company's purpose is to help others the same way I want to help myself. How have I not realized this before? I have no idea... but it made me have an overwhelming appreciation of our business and the purpose it has to society. I'd like to share this with you - both my personal goals in life, and the purpose of our company.

First, I'd like to describe a bit more of our company: Standard Ovation manages a select roster of business & motivational speakers. We have selected our speakers to partner with because of what they talk & teach to others, and how they directly impact the lives of their audiences. It gives us great satisfaction to match what they speak about to the correct audience so lives become better, leaders become stronger, sales people become more profitable, employees become more productive, and so on. Every single time one of our speakers has stepped off the stage after they delivered their keynote - the feedback we receive has been over-the-top. EVERY single time. It's truly remarkable. They are truly making a difference and growing the lives of others.

So, as I come full circle, I'd like to share with you my personal goals as well as the goals of our company. The reason I am choosing to share this with you is for the chance we may have similar, or even identical goals. If that is the case, and you'd like to know more on how our speakers can help you reach one of these goals in particular, let us know. We are here to help you and enrich your lives & to better your company. We proudly manage six of the greatest speakers and they would love to help. Check them out: www.thestandardovation.com, feel free to call me and I can also answer your questions: 913.498.9775 or email me: sarah@thestandardovation.com.

Thank you for taking the time to read this!

Terry Hawkins' Book Picked Up by Berrett-Koehler Publishing!!!

We are THRILLED to announce that this week San Francisco-based Berrett-Koehler picked up one of the books authored by our very own Ms. Terry Hawkins! The publication giant acquired Terry's inspirational book, "Why Wait to Be Great? It's Either Now or Too Late!," originally released by the self-publishing group iUniverse. Congratulations, Terry!!!

Just like the team here at Standard Ovation, the folks at Berrett-Koehler apparently know a good thing when they see it. BK President Steve Piersanti was quoted saying, "As a speaker, Terry Hawkins is absolutely spectacular. She mesmerizes and inspires crowds on the business lecture circuit, and has brilliantly taken that energy, passion and wisdom and put it into a wonderful book.” “‘Why Wait to Be Great’ fits perfectly within Berrett-Koehler’s mission, and we are thrilled to have her.” So are we!

Terry hopes with this new partnership she will be able to help even more people overcome adversity in their lives. “It’s been my life’s work to help people achieve their goals and experience success both personally and professionally,” said Terry. "With the help of Barrett-Koehler and iUniverse, the methods and teachings I’ve used in my own life to overcome great adversity throughout my career, are now available to everyone in ‘Why Wait to Be Great,’ and I hope it encourages others to deal with their pain and follow their dreams just as I have with my own.”

And in this awesome spirit of philanthropy, Terry has been educating businesses and individuals for nearly 25 years. She founded the professional training company, People in Progress Global, in 1989 and has since helped more than 300,000 people realize their goals and improve their lives. She also speaks at events all over the world inspiring people to make needed life changes and giving them specific tools to actually do it. Before relocating to the USA, Terry was the most sought-after, award-winning female speaker in Australia. "Why Wait to Be Great?” is one of many books Terry has written or co-writen, including her very popular “Stickman Rules” children’s series, “Secrets of Inspiring Women Exposed,” and “The Power of More than One.

"Sam [Richter] was great, I have seen him three times now and each time I pick up some new gems. He is a captivating speaker, very energetic and has a powerful message. In our recent conference we had a mix of different folks with different backgrounds – white collar and blue collar, welders, engineers, sales, admin, etc. I was expecting the sales folks to be impressed and enjoy Sam's presentation. I was pleasantly surprised that I also got a lot of positive feedback about Sam from our manufacturing personnel. I would highly recommend him as a keynote speaker!"

National Bullying Prevention Month - A message from Terry Hawkins

A POWERFUL message made by the remarkable Terry Hawkins - worth the read. Terry can share, teach and spread these thoughts to really make a difference whatever your age or situation. In honor of October being National Bullying Prevention Month - let us know if you'd like Terry to speak to your organization or group to make an impact on how important it is to deal with the emotional side of things in your life, too. Contact Standard Ovation: 913.498.9772 or email: info@thestandardovation.com to check Terry's availability & fee structure!

From Miss Terry Hawkins:
"Pain is a necessary part of life. When we experience physical pain, we pay attention. We know that our body is telling us something. Many hospitals will caution the use of sedatives as they can hide the true issue and make it harder to diagnose. It is no different for emotional pain. This time it is our soul telling us something. When we try to numb our emotional pain we don't give ourselves the o
pportunity to face the core issues at the heart of our pain. "Doing pain well" is not about avoiding it, going around it, going under it or hoping it will go away. It is about trusting that you have all the resources you need to walk through your pain - right into the eye of it - breathing deeply into it - and then allowing yourself to come out the other side. Your pain is one of your greatest guides. Let's not numb it through blame, accusation, medication, anger, pity, or drama. If you are feeling pain, you are communicating with your soul. Pay attention to the wisdom that will flow! Go STICKMAN!"

Kit Grant's Latest Newsletter: Keeping in Touch (K.I.T.), Oct.4, 2012 — Opportunity Abundance

“The reason so many people never get anywhere in life is because when opportunity knocks, they are out in the backyard looking for four-leaf clovers.” - Walter P Chrysler

Kit Grant's latest newsletter:
There is NO shortage of opportunities. Many come every day when we are either too busy or too lazy to recognize them. You just need to have your eyes open and your ears on “listen-mode” to recognize them and then be willing to take action. Don’t worry if you miss a few — many come around again in a slightly different form. We get so tied up “doing” what we do that we close off new ways to enhance and/or expand what we do. I still read a lot, listen to audio books and attend seminars. Is this because I have “extra” time? NO!! But you only stop learning when you decide to do that. Networking, being inquisitive and being busy living rather than being busy dying are all ways for you to discover just how much there is out there for you to explore. I am not getting any younger so I have to keep moving a bit faster every day just to sometimes keep up. Hang out with positive people … the negaholics will drag you down to their level with their messages of doom and gloom.

NEAT STUFF:
I just came across a really neat website if you are ever in the mood for travel. Check it out yourself at www.travelhawk.net. There are close to 3 million photos from hotels around the world in addition to virtually unlimited pages of information about other travel stuff. It’s the best place I have ever looked for information when you are in the planning stages for your next big vacation or just a quick getaway.

NEW DEMO:
My new speaker demo DVD is now ready — a few people requested a copy two weeks ago and should have it in the next few days. If you (or someone you know) is planning a meeting, conference or convention and is looking for a speaker, please pass along a copy of my DVD. Send me an e-mail to kit@kitgrant.com with your physical mailing address and I’ll send you a copy.

MINI-RANT:
Just when you thought you had seen and heard everything, now the striking NHLPA hockey players have taken their case to the Alberta Labour Relations Board for a ruling on whether the NHL lockout violates their union rights. Are you kidding me? A bunch of millionaires making a mockery of the rights union members have fought so hard to obtain is disgusting. I don’t recall seeing any NHL players out picketing the last time their union brothers with real jobs were on strike. The fact these millionaires are even in a so-called union is a slap in the face to the thousands of real union members who pay money to watch these clowns. Spending taxpayer money to have the Labour Relations Board listen to their bleating is the real disgrace.
